What does 192.168 l 254 mean? This question is relevant for owners of some brands. Well, 192.168.1.254 is a label which is assigned to the router by its producer. It is used by customers to get access to the admin panel with different settings. Routers by Thompson, Linksys, Westell, and some other companies are usually labeled in such way.
192.168.l.254 – Key Possibilities
Computer professionals and amateurs usually use this address (and other addresses like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.l.l) for the following purposes:
• Setting up the device. After logging in the systemic interface, a person receives access to DNS, local network settings. One can also change WPA pass (for Wi-Fi). This option is most often chosen by an average PC/laptop user, because everyone wants to protect their network from being used by neighbors.
• Changing IP. This is also done due to security issues. The procedure is explained below.
• Examining LAN connection. The task is performed through pinging the IP of the device from the PC to check gateway for information exchange.
192.168 l 254 – How to Open
Type these numbers in the address bar of your local browser (Mozilla, Chrome, IE, Apple’s Safari, etc.). The default credentials depend on the manufacturer. The login name is usually “admin”. Password, as a rule, is also “admin”, however, producing companies may use other words. This information is indicated on the bottom or the side of the router. If you have some issues, you probably need to perform a hard reset.
If you enter the address and don’t see the panel (“Page not found” notification appears), this means that you have another IP which has been set by the producing firm or you’ve changed it. For instance, TP-Link WiFi routers feature another address, typically tplinklogin.net. But when you definitely know that the factory address must be 192.168.1.254, you need to remember what you did with your device earlier. Perhaps it was not you, but a member of your family. If the data is lost, do not worry, there is a solution. The problem can be solved without calling a computer expert.
Hard Resetting
If you have forgotten login credentials, you can bring the settings back to factory ones. Your IP will be transformed into 192.168.1.254 again, the same goes for factory login & pass. Find a small button located in the deep hole on the modem. It is responsible for hard resetting. Press on it using needle/toothpick for about 20 secs. That’s it! Your device will receive predesignated characteristics.
Changing Factory IP
Routers are important devices in networks so they are attractive objects for hackers. They may use malware to obtain access to personal data of a user. The malicious software may also change firewall settings.
Fortunately, the IP is customizable. Its changing remarkably reduces the risk of being hacked. To do this, log in the admin panel, choose “Network Configuration”, enter a new address in the appropriate field, apply this, and reboot the router.
Don’t forget to write down a new address, login and passcode after changing. This will protect you from problem situations in the future.
